Vikings stadium bill passes House 73-58 – Fans urged to contact Senate

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Media Alert: Victory for the Vikings stadium bill!

Stadium bill passes House floor, now fans need to put pressure on the Senate

MINNEAPOLIS (May 7th, 2012) – After an impressive showing of labor workers, key stadium stakeholders and even some of the Vikings key players at the Capitol today, Vikings fans received the news they have been waiting for: the Vikings stadium bill passed through the House of Representatives. The vote came after many drawn out stadium bill hearings, and repeated emotional patches of heartbreak to optimism.

Chief bill author Representative Morrie Lanning (R-Moorhead) patiently and diligently helped shepherd the House bill which was peppered with amendments. Despite increases in the Vikings contributions, naming rights revenues being stripped from the team and an eight hour debate the bill lives on to be heard on the Senate floor.

With only three days left in the 2012 legislative session, this news comes as proof of amazing progress. SavetheVikes.org Founder and Fan Advocate Cory Merrifield is “Grateful for all of the support fans have provided so far. The fact that the bill has come this far is a huge victory, but we still have work to do.”

“Now the bill heads to the Senate Tuesday morning at 9am and I encourage everyone to continue pushing hard to make this stadium a reality,” says Merrifield. The hearing date for the Senate is yet to be scheduled but Merrifield says, “We’ll be ready. The fans are mobilized and looking to act swiftly.”

It’s a tight turnaround but fans can contact their Senator this morning one of two ways. Since we are short on time fans can contact their Senator using our Legislative contact tool by clicking here.

The most effective way to email them is to copy and paste the email addresses at the bottom of this communication into your email editor and send them a personalized message.

And again on Tuesday morning starting at 7am, BLOW UP THEIR PHONES by calling to follow up on the email you sent them. Tell them you would like to speak to them about supporting the Vikings stadium bill. You can find your Senators phone number by clicking here.

Here are few key points to consider when contacting them:

  • The Vikings are a cultural and economic asset that needs to be preserved by building a new stadium
  • The Vikings generate $20-30 million in annual tax revenue to the state of Minnesota
  • This bill contains no general tax funds
  • The state portion being funded by electronic pull tabs has been verified and validated by the Department of Revenue, Royal Bank of Canada and Goldman Sachs

Vikings fan support will be critical in order to get the bill through the Senate today, which will then send it into conference committee where terms and conditions can be negotiated. One of the largest points of negotiation will be the Vikings contribution.
